Alhamdulillah we started on our Aqeedah lessons and made 2 lapbooks so far. Yusuf is 3,5 years old, so they are designed for his age group.

Alhamdulillah we have lots of materials to use for our Aqeedah lessons, thanks to our Ummi bloggers for sharing and making those materials available for our children and us (parents). May Allah swt bless them and their families immensely, ameen.

We will be using following materials that we have available in our hands:

Please forgive me for the long absence. We continued with out letters, although I wasn't able to update here. But we didn't do much last two weeks, since kids' Dad was home and they had lots of outdoor time alhamdulillah.

Letter Gg

You can download letter Gg printable from HERE, inshaAllah. I must say that all the pictures on the paper were chosen by Yusuf.

We did following activities for the letter Gg: Letter Gg is for grapes, gumballs. Yusuf worked with glue and colored with paint and crayons. Alphabet coloring sheets were mainly taken from http://www.3dinosaurs.com/ and http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/.

To encourage more good behavior from his side, we started A Good deeds jar project. We took a jar and decorated it. Reward for the good deed does not necessarily has to be something sweet, it can be a small note with a certain good deed written on it (example). When the child collects more of them, or fills the jar with good deeds, you can get child a book, a toy, etc.

We also made a paper mache globe, there are lots of them on the internet with step by step pictures and guidelines. Ours did not turn out to be perfect, we started off with bigger balloon, we applied the first layer of glue and left the balloon to dry for 2 days. But somehow I didn't go back to do the second layer for a while and kids played with it. When I hold the balloon it was not firm and solid anymore with few indentations on it. Yusuf took a lot smaller balloon and said let's do the globe again. We only did one layer of glue and it was enough. For the continents we chose traditional Montessori continent colors.

As per their terms of use, I can not give you the direct link to the pdf files, browse their website and inshaAllah you will find lots of good stuff..

Assalamu alaykum

Yusuf has been playing independently with the blocks since he was 2,5. His Dad would build him masjids, towers, etc., when he was young and Yusuf would sit and watch him. As soon as he hit 2-2,5 he started building by himself, whenever AbuYusuf builds something, he usually helps him to put a block here and there.

Blocks are great fun and really good at keeping your child busy for some time, alhamdulillah. (smile)

Below are few examples of what they did together in the past few months:

Sometimes Yusuf comes up to me and asks me to build with him, I'm not as creative and good as his Dad. Together we built masjids, zoo, farm, shops, parking lots, etc..

Yusuf's work:

Yusuf mostly builds masjids and then parking lot next to the masjid. He likes building ships and trains too. Once he is into it, he can spend an hour playing with the blocks. Alhamdulillah I can leave him to play on his own for some time, although I have to be close-by, whenever he calls me.

We are learning about Hajj this week. Alhamdulillah so much available on the internet to use and get the inspiration and ideas from, thanks to the technological advances. MashaAllah Muslim Ummi Bloggers input is amazing and may Allah reward them and their families with all the goodness for their hard work, ameen!

We started with a Hajj mobile, we copied the idea from HERE. May Allah swt reward the sister Umm Sayang and the team at Smart Ark. The coloring pages are taken from Smart Ark, Yusuf colored the pictures (I helped him a little too with few of them), we added extra pictures of air plane and sheep to our Hajj mobile. We used cardboard, hole punch, few pipe cleaners and stapler to make the mobile. Yusuf was really interested in knowing more about the Hajj rituals, was asking questions, so I thought we should not stop here, but continue learning as he is eager to learn more. He likes when we do craft work, he always comes up to me and says Mom I love you, when you do crafts with me. (smile)

The next thing we did was Hajj Bulletin Board, we got all of our materials from IBB. May Allah reward sister at talibiddeenjr and sister Umm AbdulBasir for all their work, ameen.

I explained more about the Hajj rituals using the map and Hajj day by day cards. To help him understand a little more, I thought of making a Hajj rituals display on the little table. We started off by making mini paper tents.

Our Mina tents:

They were supposed to be white in color, I only had yellow construction paper at hand, hence they are yellow looking. I went ahead with yellow, just to give him an idea of how tents may look like.

Bismillah

Assalamu alaykum,

It's been a while since I last posted about our early learning journey. Time's flying, subhanAllah. Life's been a bit busy and I could not really post much. Few times I attempted to write something on here, but then got interrupted/something came in the way and then I never returned to my draft posts again.

Yusuf is now 3 years old, growing fast, alhamdulillah. He likes learning, reading and playing with his cars and blocks. He is at home with me. At his age, he knows the alphabet, recognizes all the letters, we are learning the letter sounds now (phonics). For phonics we are using Progressive Phonics Program. The books are FREE to download from the website, alhamdulillah. I have read good reviews about the program on the internet. InshaAllah I will try posting about our activities as we learn. The Montessori method calls this time a "Sensitive Period", where the child is more aware of and interested in learning a certain thing at this time. I am just using this moment, as he is showing an interest in learning the alphabet, he often comes up to me and says Mom, let's do school. Parents should go with flow in my opinion and not burden their kids with loads of information to learn.

Alhamdulillah so much is available on the internet nowadays, we are using materials from other blogs and educational websites. We are/will be learning our Arabic letters at the same time, inshaAllah. He recognizes most of the Arabic letters. We will be using FREE printable materials for our Arabic letters from Tarbiyah Homeschool. MashaAllah our sister at Tarbiyah Homeschool compiled Arabic Letter Packs, they are FREE to download, alhamdulillah. There are many Arabic alphabet coloring pages on the internet, age 3 and above is probably the right age to do the coloring activities.

He is good with his numbers, he knows and recognizes them in Arabic and English, alhamdulillah. Like most of the bloggers I try and make the learning process fun and not too educational.

By listening to Qur'an and us reciting he has learned his short surahs, basic duas and adhkar. We listen to Qur'an on computer/phone and use wathakker kids for visual purposes. In the kid's section you can find Qur'an recitation (adult reciter reads an ayah and child repeats after him), nasheeds, coloring pages and much more.

Letter A activities:

For this letter we got most of our printable materials from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

Assalamu alaykum,

Ramadan's gone and the month of Shawwal is passing by already. Belated Eid al-Fitr mubarak, inshaAllah everyone had a good celebration..

We could not do much this Ramadan. Bi ithnillah I'll make more preparations for the next year. However, Yusuf learned few things. He was pretending to fast and broke his fast with me or his dad in the nearby masjid. We were invited for iftars, so he learned that we share food with others and invite people for iftar during Ramadan. We read his Ramadan book several times.

My lovely niece was visiting us on her school holidays, she and Yusuf made Ramadan lanterns and paper chains. She came up with few brilliant ideas, together they drew shapes, scribbled and wrote on the paper and made lanterns out of that paper. I also made Yusuf draw with paint and he played with different colors. We made a flower out of those colored papers. I made few more decorations using the tutorials found on the internet. Here is how our wall looked like:
Don’t finish reading the Quran without it transforming you. Don’t feed your body at suhoor, but starve your heart of Qiyam. Don’t reduce this downpour of mercy to just a month of sweets and lavish iftars. Seek Him, you will find. Take a sincere step towards change, transformation, redemption. If you do, you will find Him in front of you. Find Him this month. He’s been there all along. Closer than your jugular vein. Look and you’ll find. Walk and you’ll arrive.

This Ramadan lapbook is ideal for toddlers. Bright pictures and no text. I didn't write anything on it, when I designed it. But I do think it would have been better with some text in it. We made this lapbook for our dear sister Umm Sara's Ramadan Giveaway in 2011.

I pasted the pictures of the main acts of worship/ibadah that we do during the month of Ramadan, which includes fasting, reading Qur'an, praying, giving sadaqa, adhkar, going to Masjid for 5 daily and taraweeh prayers.

Assalamu alaykum,

Ramadan is fast approaching, alhamdulillah. My son is almost 3 now. Alhamdulillah now is a great time to do some crafts with him for the Ramadan. MashaAllah so much is available on the internet nowadays, jazakumAllah khayran for our Ummi Bloggers, who shared their Ramadan materials, ideas, thoughts and experiences. InshaAllah I'm planning to make/set up a Ramadan Bulletin Board and do some crafts with Yusuf for Ramadan.

We started with Ramadan Good Deeds Tree. Idea belongs to Umm Sayang. She made a 3D tree, we loved the idea and made one too. There are some other variations of good deeds tree done by other Ummi bloggers that we liked (by Umm Abdul Basir, Lifetime learning at home, Umm Adam, Raising Sahabas). I'm sure there are more of good deed trees/charts done by other Muslim Bloggers on the internet, I only provided few examples above.

We made the tree out of cardboard and we chose craft foam for the leaves. We will most likely staple the leaves on the tree. Leaves are big enough to write the good deeds on them. We also made some apples. For each good deed, Yusuf will earn a leaf or an apple. We will inshaAllah post a photo of our good deeds tree after Ramadan.

Assalamu alaykum,

DIY muslim dolls is a good project for older kids. Moms can make them for younger kids, they are great for pretend play and very easy to make, mashaAllah.

Recently I was after some islamic crafts and I started searching on google and I came across felt muslim doll tutorial. The idea belongs to sister Karima, may Allah reward her for the simple and yet brilliant idea and for the tutorial. Here is the link for the felt muslim doll and prayer mat tutorial by sister Karima:
http://www.karimascrafts.com/2013/01/felt-muslim-doll-and-prayer-mat-tutorial.html

I didn't spend much time doing the dolls, hence they are not too good looking. Didn't do my measurements right, but my son is happy with the outcome, alhamdulillah. He took them away as soon as they were ready and started playing with them.

After I made felt muslim girl, I had to make a muslim boy right away, as requested by my son.

Recently I came across very-very inspirational video series. Its called Traveler with the Qur'an, it's in Arabic but comes with English subtitles. Every episode goes for 15-20 minutes and it is series of 30 episodes. The host of the show (Sheikh Fahad Al Kandari, who is huffadh himself) travels around the world to meet various huffadh and they share their experiences. Lots of tips/recommendations are given in the show mashaAllah and each and every episode will leave you teared and so determined to be from among the ahlul Qur'an.. I have only watched 2 episodes, but hurried to share and post the video here.
Click here for all 30 episodes, inshaAllah.

Practical life exercises are the foundation of the Montessori environment. I like how the child gets exposed to so many of them from the early age.

I have seen button snakes on the internet and I thought I will make one for Yusuf. Blogger moms have used flowers, shapes, leaves, etc. for that reason. And I chose to make mini masjids. It was a good practice for Yusuf, he was frustrated initially, because he couldn't manage sliding the mini masjids through the button, but then he started getting them on and was happy at the end.

We have started on our early math journey, alhamdulillah. Yusuf is very much into numbers and counting in different languages, he surprised me by counting from 1 to 10 in Arabic the other day. He recognizes the numbers, but not the Arabic written ones. I will inshaAllah write a different post on numbers.

We bought some more animals to my son and alhamdulillah they were big in size. He has been playing with them a lot. It's good we have more of the same animals now (big and little), it was a good chance to introduce Yusuf the concept of big vs little. He heard us using the terminology a lot and he knew what we meant by it, but I thought I would teach him the concept by showing lots of examples. So we took out our animal box, found few of the same animals and placed them in a row.

Few weeks ago I have remade our little masjid. It was getting little dirty and in the past I saw my son using the masjid for different purposes. I mainly saw him getting on top of it to get the things out of his reach, if he didn't find any chair around. As I didn't fill the box with anything, it was slowly getting wrecked. Then I thought it was time to remake it. So the first thing I did was I opened the box and filled it with recycled paper, so it would last Yusuf for awhile, if he decided to climb on it again. He doesn't do it anymore though, I explained him that it was not a good thing to do. After I sticky taped the sides of the box, it was ready to be covered with felt fabric. I thought I would use felt for it this time, as I did it with the Kaaba. So I used the felt that I had in hands, the end result looks pretty much like the old masjid, except for the colors and here's the finished result:

SubhanAllah time has flown so fast and we are waiting for the next Ramadan to come now.. May Allah swt accept our fasts, ibadah and keep us steadfast in the deen, inshaAllah. Like most of you, we had really busy Ramadan and Eid, alhamdulillah. Yusuf was usually up with us for suhoor and iftar during Ramadan, I think he had a good time on Eid too, alhamdulillah. We visited family and friends and had many visitors coming to our house too.

I didn't have much time to decorate the house for Eid, all I did was hang more Eid balloons to our Ramadan wall and prepare Yusuf's gift. We bought Yusuf his first little thawb and he wore it for Eid prayer, mashaAllah. In his little box he had lollies, cookies, chocolate and Eid badge.

I think Yusuf was really excited about the gift box idea, he had been reading the Eid book over and over during Ramadan. And in the book Grandma Fatima prepared lots of Eid gift boxes for the kiddies. I wanted Yusuf to have his own little box of sweets for the day and mashaAllah he had been carrying that box around all day long.

Yusuf turned 2 this Ramadan, alhamdulillah. I haven't started any formal teaching with him yet, maybe when he hits 2,5 inshaAllah. But we do learn things here and there. He has been showing lots of interest in numbers and alphabet. He has learned to count from 1 to 10 in Uzbek and English and he does recognize the numbers, but I have yet to teach him the concept. He still plays a lot with his blocks and that's the time when AbuYusuf joins him. Together they build masjids and towers and other buildings.

He still brings his animals and puts them in a row to pray. I usually ask him to pack up his toys once he's done playing with them, sometimes he listens to me, sometimes he wants me to help him packing and other times he doesn't want to do it. But generally he is a good boy, alhamdulillah. Below he is putting away his blocks using kitchen tongs, he found the idea quiet amusing, although he didn't finish it to the end. Something else came up that caught his interest and I had to put the blocks away (smile)..
